Randy Lawrence:
All right. Hey, I want to welcome you to today’s show. The question or topic for today, I need help. I want you to say that out loud. I need help. You know, the truth of the matter is so many people that are looking to achieve their dreams or to pursue this vision, they believe or think that they’re going to do it on their own. And it’s an affliction really that many people have where they cannot ask for help. And what happens is it hinders the real ability to achieve the dream. What I would suggest to you when you begin to look at your life and you look at the desires that you have, and the dreams that you have, it really is a necessity that you’re going to need help, or you’re going to need a team. Let’s just talk about what we do in the multifamily arena, in apartment communities, right?

Randy Lawrence:
There are some people out there that are not exactly what we do, but they are a quote unquote investor and they’ve bought one or two communities. And the reality is they are trying to do it all themselves. And really what happens is it is a trap of just creating another job for themselves. So, because the truth of the matter is to accomplish anything I would say significant, you’re going to need help. And that’s one of the things I’ve recognized very early on here is that in the process of pursuing the dreams that I have and what I believe God has given me to do, that I cannot do it on my own. That’s just simple and true. And so for quite a long time, for good Lord probably it goes back 23 years since I put my faith in Christ, that really for me was probably a central turning point because when I entered into faith in the Lord, this was a new arena for me and I recognized I needed quality mentors. I needed people in my life that could help me.

Randy Lawrence:
I needed help. Isn’t that funny. And so I had one guy he was, he still is, he’s an elite cardiologist, top couple percentage in the world. I think he was named like the number one, two or three in the world. But he reached out to me or I reached out to him and he began to help me. At that time I was a stockbroker, a little rough and tumble and money manager and, but he began to help me. And so that’s what I began to see him and another guy that was a African-American guy, he was a pastor and a coach and he became a mentor and a friend and almost like a father figure to me. But they began to help me to see a different path and a different opportunity.

Randy Lawrence:
I think about one of the very first apartment buildings that we bought, we took over the loan from another investor. The guy just really couldn’t execute on the plan. And so I took it over subject to the investors approval or lender and or investors approval. And one of the guys was a guy, so Jewish guy, he’s an attorney, just a super sharp guy, real estate investor for good Lord I don’t know 20 some years at that time or whatever it was. And we became friends and we began to have lunch together and I would connect together with him to get his insights and advice. Here it is now, good Lord it’s 20 some years later, 23 years later, he invests with us in apartments today still.

Randy Lawrence:
But he was early on a help to me. And then I think about another guy that I met at church where his family owned a couple thousand apartment units. And I would meet together with him at the apartment complexes and bring coffee and kind of talk to them and see what they were doing and see how they began to do the journey that they had done from being a, his dad owned insurance brokerages and then they transitioned into commercial and multi-family real estate. And so my question to you, and those are just early mentors, I mean, I just this morning published ads through our hiring service for new team members, which are Director of Finance, another asset management team member. We just hired an additional construction coordinator. These are all people that are coming on to our team, will report to other team members or report to me.

Randy Lawrence:
But I recognize that I need those people to continue to advance forward. And so my question to you would be when you look at your dreams and you look at your desires, so maybe it is you have a desire to invest in real estate, but you’re a full-time attorney. So you’ve got to be willing to take that step to have a team. Whether that’s with my firm or with somebody else’s or somebody else that you partner with, how are you going to do it on your own when you’re practicing law 50 hours a week or whatever it is? I mean, how are you going to do it on your own if you’re running a full-time plumbing business? How are you going to get all the expertise? How are you going to get all the deals?

Randy Lawrence:
There’s a couple of guys I know that realistically they wanted to band together, three or four of them, in buying an apartment complex. I told them three years ago, it’s not ever going to happen. And they’re like, okay, you know. And these are professional people, have invested some with us, but man, I really want to buy a complex on my own. So the three amigos let’s call it, they’re going to buy their own complex. And I told them, it’s just never going to happen because you’re busy running your professional practice. You’re busy running your business. How are you going to spend the time to find a great deal? How are you going to spend the time to do all the things that we do? And the truth is, because they tried to do it on their own, they have not ever gotten that. And so, again friends, this is a thing that’s real.

Randy Lawrence:
And that’s why I said at the very beginning, it’s an affliction. I almost see that it’s a thorn in your side planted by the enemy to prevent you from realizing the fullness of the dreams that God has for you. Because friends, a God sized dream is never intended for you to just be able to do it alone. Think about some of the Olympic athletes even, the pinnacle of pinnacle. They are a sprinter, a world-class sprinter. And you say, well, there you go Randy, they’re doing it on their own. Friends, no. That’s not true at all. Over the previous eight years, 10 years, maybe even 12, 16 years, they’ve had coaches, they’ve had nutritional specialist, they’ve had sprinting coaches. They’ve had running partners. They’ve had weight training partners. They’ve had weight training coaches. They’ve had doctors, they’ve had chiropractors and on and on and on, that they were willing to say, I need help.

Randy Lawrence:
And so that’s why I started off this episode here with that question, because I thought about that this week. And one of the biggest things that I learned is that I do need help. And I’m not ashamed to say that, hey, I need help. And now I want the best help. I want the best people that I can hire. I want the best people to work with me. And we have the highest standards, right? I don’t lower my standards for some other investor or for some team member or for some vendor. I don’t. And so, but again, I want you to ask yourself, what’s been holding you back from getting the help you need? Maybe it’s in your business, right? Maybe it’s in your business. You know what I mean? Like, oh, well, somebody can’t do it as good as me.

Randy Lawrence:
Yes. That may be true. But you could set up the systems, the accountability and the KPIs, key performance indicators, so that they could do it maybe 80% as good as you. And then you help them. You give them equipping in resources, in accountability, and now you help them move from an 80% to an 85 and then to a 90 and a 92. And now you’re focusing on other things. So it’s really this process of drawing in other people, bringing them into the vision, into the dream, and then having them help you accomplish it. That’s part of what God’s plan and purpose is for you. So I want to encourage you to shake off that mentality, shake off the thorn in the side of you’re going to do it on your own and begin to connect together with the right people to help you achieve your dreams.
